Delays in Exporting BonteBuck Trophies

28 Aug 2018

Doug chats about the delays in exporting your BonteBuck Trophies and the implications of getting an import permit to export it from South Africa back to USA

Today we would like to discuss the Bontebuck and the implications of getting an import permit for this beautiful animal to export it from South Africa back to the United States.

In recent times you would have noted if you have hunted a Bontebuck that there have been severe delays in getting your import permit issued by US Fishing Wildlife in the United States.

The reason behind this is that there is severe over-regulation in place that is now taking into consideration the impact of your hunt on that specific herd of Bontebuck. The Bontebuck program in South Africa is one of the most successful conservation through hunting scenarios.

From the few Bontebuck that remained, due to conservation-minded hunting, sustainable hunting, that population has been brought back into a strong, thriving population and species as a whole.

When you apply for your permit, you will always receive a letter giving you permission to hunt that animal and a registration of the herd that you will pursue. These are the documents necessary for the application, to get your import permit into the United States.

I can’t tell you more than that. It is a case of over-regulation. The delays are anything up to a year, a year and a half. We cannot get any clarity as to why it’s taking so long, but the backlog is such that it’s now going to take longer.
